The Main Investigative Department of the Investigative Committee completed the investigation into the criminal case against Alexei Popov for the rape and murder of a student from the United States (Part 2 of Article 131 and Part 2 of Article 105 of the Criminal Code).
The investigation found that on June 15, 2021 the girl, being on the side of the road, tried to stop a passing car. Popov, who was passing by in a car, offered to give her a ride. Taking advantage of the situation, he drove the girl to a deserted area near the village of Kalinkino, Gorodets district of Nizhny Novgorod region. There the accused stole her property to the amount of 83 850 rubles after which he raped the victim and stabbed her twice in the neck. The girl died of her wounds at the scene.
In the course of the investigation, a preventive measure in the form of detention was chosen for Popov at the request of the investigation. The property of the accused worth more than 270,000 rubles was seized to secure the civil claim filed by the mother of the deceased.
An exhaustive scope of investigative actions was carried out in the criminal case, and sufficient evidence was gathered to prove Popov's guilt in the acts incriminated to him.
The investigation gathered enough evidence, therefore, the criminal case with the approved indictment was sent to the court.
