The evidence gathered by the Main Investigative Department of the Investigative Committee of Russia was found by the court to be sufficient to convict two residents of the Republic of Ingushetia, Ababukar Tochiev and Zyaudin Kartoev.  Depending on their roles, they were each found guilty of kidnapping the three victims in Transbaikal Province and the Republic of Khakasia and killing one of them in the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia) (Article 126 Part 2, Article 105 Part 2 of the Criminal Code).

The investigation and the court found that the defendants in September 2020 hired two residents of the Republic of Khakassia as drivers for the transportation of illegally mined gold from the Magadan region to the city of Chita in Transbaikal region, which was hidden in the caches of the truck. Upon the vehicle's arrival in Chita, a shortage of the precious metal was discovered in one of the caches. In order to obtain information about its location, a criminal group of seven men kidnapped the hired drivers. They physically abused them for several days, using weapons and objects used as weapons. When the defendants learned from the kidnapped men about the possible involvement of one of the drivers' acquaintances in the disappearance of the gold, they also kidnapped the latter. They then brought the three victims to the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia), where one of them, who they believed was involved in the disappearance of the gold, was killed.

During the investigation 30 different examinations were carried out, including forensic, forensic-medical, genetic, psychological and psychiatric examinations.

The court sentenced Tochiev to 19 years in prison and Kartoev to 11 years in a strict regime penal colony. 

The five persons involved in the criminal case went into hiding after committing the crime. All of them are wanted and the court chose a measure of restraint in respect of them in absentia in the form of detention.
