Criminal Case Initiated on Injuring Civilian as Result of Fire Opened by Ukrainian Military

The Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation continues to document the facts of the use of prohibited means and methods of warfare, as well as ill-treatment of the civilian population in Donbass by Ukrainian servicemen.

According to the investigators, on January 29, 2022, servicemen of the Ukrainian Armed Forces opened precision small arms fire at a civilian infrastructure facility – a residential building in the town of Oleksandrivka in the self-proclaimed Donetsk People's Republic, located several hundred meters from the Ukrainian military forces’ position; as a result of these actions, a 56-year-old civilian was injured.

Firing at residential buildings in the settlement, Ukrainian servicemen intended to murder or cause severe bodily harm to an unlimited number of civilians residing in southeastern Ukraine and not participating in the armed conflict. The Ukrainian military violated the Protocol on the Cessation of the Use of Weapons in southeastern Ukraine and the Memorandum thereto, as well as provisions of the Convention Relative to Protection of Civilian Persons in Time of War and Additional Protocol II thereto.

Following this incident, a criminal case was initiated on a possible crime under Part 1 of Article 356 of the Criminal Code (ill-treatment of civilians).

The Investigative Committee of Russia is currently identifying the Ukrainian military officials involved in this and other crimes committed against the civilian population of Donbass.
