Criminal Case Initiated on Damaging Memorial Site in Slovakia

On the night of March 9, 2022, the perpetrators painted over a monument in the town of Svidnik of the Slovak Republic. More than 9 thousand soldiers of the Red Army are buried in this place, and a complex of memorial objects has been erected to perpetuate the memory of those who died defending the Fatherland during the Great Patriotic War.

Following this incident, the Investigative Committee of Russia initiated a criminal case on a possible crime under Paragraphs A, B of Part 2 of Article 243.4 of the Criminal Code (damage to a memorial object outside of the Russian Federation, perpetuating the memory of those who died in the defense of the Fatherland during the Great Patriotic War, committed by a group of persons).

The actions of those who committed the illegal act are directed against the interests of Russia in the field of preserving the historical memory of the USSR efforts during the Second World War and its decisive role in the victory over fascism.

The investigators are taking measures to establish all the circumstances of the incident and the persons involved in this crime.
