Criminal Cases Have Been Initiated Against Ukrainian Servicemen Shelling Settlements in the LPR and DPR

The Military Investigative Departments of the Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation have initiated criminal cases against unidentified servicemen of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, including members of the 56th separate motorized infantry brigade and 54th separate mechanized brigade. Their actions contain signs of crimes under Part 1, Article 356 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (use of prohibited means and methods of warfare).

According to the investigators, on April 10 and 11, 2022, servicemen of the Armed Forces of Ukraine gave their subordinates illegal orders to shell residential buildings and public places located in the towns of Yelenovka and Yasinovataya in the Donetsk People’s Republic, as well as in the cities of Irmino and Novoaydar of the Lugansk People’s Republic. The shelling included large-caliber artillery weapons and the Uragan multiple launch rocket systems.

As a result of illegal actions of the Ukrainian military, a woman in the city of Novoaydar died on the spot having suffered a shrapnel penetrating wound to the chest. A resident of the town of Yelenovka suffered burns; a woman in the city of Irmino suffered mine-explosive bodily injuries. In Yasinovataya, six civilians were wounded by shrapnel, two of them died. The shelling destroyed residential buildings and facilities.

By their actions, the Ukrainian military violated international acts that secure the right of every person to life, freedom and personal integrity, forbid attacking undefended cities and settlements, as well as encroach on the life and physical integrity of non-combatants.

The military investigative authorities of the Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation are taking measures aimed at establishing all the circumstances of the incident, and identifying those involved in the commission of these crimes.
