A Criminal Case Has Been Initiated over Damage to the Monument to Soviet Soldiers in Latvia

The Main Investigative Department of the IC of Russia has initiated a criminal case over the damage to the monument to Soviet soldiers in the Republic of Latvia; the case has been initiated on the grounds of a crime under Paragraphs a, b, Part 2, Article 243.4 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (damage to a monument perpetuating the memory of the fallen defenders of the Fatherland and its interests during the Great Patriotic War).

According to the investigators, no later than May 20, 2022, the attackers, using special equipment, carried out the demolition of the monument to Soviet military pilots, which was located in the neighborhood of Iļģuciems, the city of Riga, the Republic of Latvia. This monument perpetuated the memory of Soviet soldiers who died defending the Fatherland during the Great Patriotic War and the liberation of Europe from Nazism. Such actions are directed against the interests of Russia in preserving the historical memory of the activities of the USSR during the Second World War and the decisive role in the victory over Fascism.

The Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation is taking actions to establish all the circumstances of the incident.
