The commander of the sniper squad of the Armed Forces of Ukraine has been found guilty of murdering a civilian in Mariupol

The evidence gathered by the Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation has been deemed sufficient by the Supreme Court of the Donetsk People's Republic to convict Nikolai Velichko, commander of the 3rd sniper squad of the 1st sniper platoon of the sniper company of the 36th Separate Marine Brigade of the Ukrainian Armed Forces. He has been found guilty of crimes under Part 1 of Article 356 and clauses "z" and "l" of Part 2 of Article 105 of the Criminal Code of the RF (murder committed by a group of persons based on political and ideological hatred).

The investigation and the court have established that on March 14 and 15 of 2022, Velichko, along with a fellow serviceman, was on combat alert duty at a firing position located in a residential building in the city of Mariupol, Donetsk People's Republic. Upon spotting an unarmed man who was not participating in the armed conflict and posed no threat, they reported it via radio to their commanding officers and received an illegal order to kill the civilian. Assuming the man to support pro-Russian positions, and motivated by political and ideological hatred, Velichko, acting as part of an organized group, shot the passerby with a "Savage 110 BA" sniper rifle. The victim died at the scene from a fatal gunshot wound.

The court sentenced Velichko to 25 years of imprisonment in a high-security correctional facility.

The investigation of the criminal case against the commander who gave the illegal order to murder the civilian has also been completed and the case has been forwarded for the approval of the indictment and subsequent trial.
