The Moscow Academy of the Investigative Committee of Russia named after A. Ya. Sukharev hosted a plenary session of the Lekan Readings

The Moscow Academy of the Investigative Committee named after A.Ya. Sukharev, hosted a plenary session of the International Scientific and Practical Conference “Criminalistics Support for Crime Investigation (Lekanov Readings),” which took place over two days in collaboration with the St. Petersburg Academy of the Investigative Committee.

More than 60 criminologists, investigators from the Russian Investigative Committee, and other law enforcement officials participated in the event, both in person and via videoconference. Among them were 8 Doctors and 14 Candidates of Science representing leading legal universities in Russia, 23 investigative and other law enforcement officials, as well as postgraduate students and adjuncts.

Representatives from Kutafin Moscow State Law University, the Academy of Management of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia, the Prince Alexander Nevsky Military University of the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation, the Humanitarian-Social Institute, the International Law Institute, Buryat State University named after Dorzhi Banzarov, the Russian State University of Justice, Tula State University, Udmurt State University, and other universities, as well as employees from the Main Criminalistics Department (Criminalistics Center) of the Russian Investigative Committee, investigative bodies of the Investigative Committee, faculty, and students of the A. Ya. Sukharev Moscow Academy of the Investigative Committee and the St. Petersburg Academy of the Investigative Committee took active part in the conference.

Representatives from the Academy of Law Enforcement Agencies under the General Prosecutor’s Office of Kazakhstan and the Institute for Advanced Training and Retraining of the Investigative Committee of Belarus also attended the plenary session.

Opening the conference, Acting Rector of the A.Ya. Sukharev Moscow Academy of the Investigative Committee, Oleg Yurievich Antonov, noted that the event’s theme was especially relevant given the recent celebration of the 70th anniversary of the Criminalistics Service.

During the conference, the participants discussed the history and development of the Criminalistics Service in the Investigative Committee of Russia and covered topics of technical and forensic support for crime detection and investigation.

Renowned criminology scientists, leading specialists, and forensic experts spoke at the conference. Valery Nikolayevich Karagodin gave a talk on “Current Issues in Implementing Forensic Research Results in Investigative Practice”; Nadezhda Pavlovna Maylis presented on “What Unites Criminologists and Forensic Experts in Solving and Investigating Crimes”; Tatyana Fedorovna Moiseeva discussed “Forensic Examinations: Current State and Development Prospects”; and Boris Yakovlevich Gavrilov spoke on “Problems of Forensic Support for Investigations at the Stage of Criminal Case Initiation.”

The speakers highlighted the role of Yuri Ivanovich Lekanov, the first head of the Main Criminalistics Department of the Investigative Committee, Honored Lawyer of the Russian Federation, and Lieutenant General of Justice, in establishing and developing the Criminalistics Service. His wife, Irina Ivanovna Lekanova, gave a welcoming address and donated personal items of Yuri Ivanovich to a dedicated auditorium at the academy.

Alla Vladimirovna Khmeleva, the head of the Research Activities Department (Criminalistics Research Institute) of the Main Criminalistics Department of the Investigative Committee of Russia, emphasized the importance of reflecting on the history of the Criminalistics Service's development in the prosecutor’s office and later in the Investigative Committee. She presented commemorative books on the history of work of Main Criminalistics Department and Yuri Ivanovich Lekanov to the academy.

Vasily Alexandrovich Reva, a veteran of the investigative authorities and Senior Justice Advisor, also shared memories of working with Yu.I. Lekanov.

In memory of Yuri Ivanovich Lekanov, the Investigative Committee of Russia made a biographical film.
