An international seminar on combating corruption taking place in St. Petersburg

The Russian-German international seminar called “Fight against corruption: History and present” is opened today in the building of the Russian State Historical Archives in St. Petersburg and held during the week of Germany in St. Petersburg. The words of welcome were said by the Vice-Chairman of the Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation Elena Leonenko, the Head of the Main Investigative Department of St. Petersburg Andrei Lavrenko, the Consul-General of Germany in St. Petersburg Peter Schaller, the Adviser to the President of Russia Veniamin Yakovlev, the Vice-President of the Federal Criminal Office of Germany Juergen Mayer, the Director of the German Foundation for International Legal Cooperation of the Ministry of Justice of Germany Dirk Mirow, the Director of the Russian State Historical Archive Alexander Sokolov and others. The officials of the Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation as well as prosecutors, lawyers, notaries, judges, foreign experts in the field of combating corruption and the teaching staff of higher educational institutions are taking part in the seminar. Speaking at the seminar, Vice-Chairman of the Investigative Committee of Russia Elena Leonenko mentioned that the Investigative Committee creates a mechanism to combat corruption, based on a single method of organization of investigative and procedural controls. That was done for developing of national anti-corruption strategy and plan. The specialization of investigating corruption cases was introduced and also units were formed to monitor the investigators. A statistical report on crimes of corruption was developed which has allowed to respond to defects identified in the work analysis. The effective cooperation with supervisory authorities and intelligence services was established and this is the most important factors influencing the effectiveness of investigative work in the field of fighting corruption. The work of participants in the working groups “Corruption in politics”, “Corruption in the economy”, “Household corruption” is expected on the second day of the event.
