Rustam Mahmudov charged with killing a journalist of “Novaya Gazeta” Anna Politkovskaya

The General Investigative Office of the Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation has charged Rustam Mahmudov, born in 1973, with crimes under paragraphs “б”, “ж” part 2 of art. 105, part 1 of art. 222 of the RF Criminal Code (murder and illegal arms trafficking), as well as part 2 of art. 125.1 and part 3 of art. 148 of the RSFSR Criminal Code (kidnapping and extortion).

According to investigators, it is R. Makhmudov who is the perpetrator of assassination of the journalist of “Novaya Gazeta” Anna Politkovskaya. To date, the investigators have sufficient evidence of his guilt in the crime. In addition, R. Mahmudov committed a number of other crimes on the territory of Moscow in the mid 90s, including kidnapping and extortion of another's property under the threat of violence against the person and his family, who owns the property.

Currently investigations and search actions are carried out aimed at collecting and consolidating evidence in the case, as well as the identifying and detention of associates and those ordered Anna Politkovskaya’s murder. Criminal investigation is continued.
