On 5 May 2012, federal TV channels and Internet sources spread information about an outbreak of suppurative-septic infection among newborns. The Orenburg region investigative bodies of the Russian Investigative Committee organized a pre-investigative check into the fact.

According to preliminary information, since 2 May 2012 there have been episodes of suppurative-septic infection among the newborns in postnatal department of maternity hospital of perinatal center of Orenburg Regional Clinical Hospital. The number of infected is being verified, as apart from 5 babies, who developed the disease at the said period, there are ill babies among those discharged earlier, at the end of April and beginning of May.

At present a complex of checks is being carried out to reveal the facts of neglect of duty by medical stuff of the hospital. Assays, probes and other samples necessary for testing were collected by investigators together with control bodies. Officials and medical staff of the hospital are being questioned. A procedural decision will be made following the results of the check.
