Four members of organized criminal community charged with terrorist attack in Domodedovo airport to stand court

Main Investigations Directorate of Russia’s Investigative Committee has finished investigating a criminal case against four members of an organized criminal community involved as investigators believe in a terrorist attack in Domodedovo airport – brothers Islam and Ilez Yandiyevs, Akhmed Yevloyev and Bashir Khamkhoyev.

Depending on the part of each of them in the crime, they are charged with crimes under part 2 of article 210 (participation in a criminal community), part 2 of article 209 (participation in a stable armed group and in its assaults), paragraph “b” of part 3 of article 205 (terrorism), part 1 of article 30, paragraph “a” of part 2 of article 205 (attempted terrorist attack), paragraphs “a, e, g, h, i” of part 2 of article 105 (murder), part 3 of article 30, paragraphs “a, e, g, h, i” of part 2 of article 105 (attempted murder), part 3 of article 222 (illegal handling of firearms) and part 3 of article 223 of the RF Criminal Code (illegal manufacture of arms). Islam Yandiev is also accused of plotting a terrorist attack (part 1 of article 30, article 205).

According to investigators, on 24 January 2011 at about 4:30 p.m. in foreign airlines arrivals area of Domodedovo international airport Magomed Yevloev, 21, set off a hand-made explosive devise stuck to his belt of 3 to 5 kg of TNT and fitted with numerous cylindrical rollers and ball bearings as a striking element. The explosion killed 37 and injured 172 Russian and foreign citizens. The investigators suppose that the attack was organized by a leader of a criminal organization “Imarat Kavkaz” Doku Umarov, subordinate to whom was the gang led by Aslan Byutukaev and Supyan Abdullaev who chose and trained a suicide bomber Magomed Yevloev. A total of about 35 people were in the gang. On 28 March 2011 as a result of a special operation in the Ingush republic the rebel camp was destroyed and 17 bandits were killed on the spot. Search and investigation operations have helped to identify a total of 28 members of “Imarat Kavkaz” involved in organization and implementation of the terrorist attack in Domodedovo airport, four of them were detained and arrested. Umarov, Byutukaev, Rustam Altemirov, Zaurbek Amriev, Mikail Bogatyryov, Islam Yevloev and Ibragim Torshkhoev are wanted. They were charged in absentia with grave and especially grave crimes of terrorist nature. Investigators are checking the information that the accused Altemirov and Amriev were killed in Istanbul on 16 September 2011.

There are 117 volumes of criminal case, including 38 volumes of indictment. Investigators have carried out about 600 various examinations, including linguistic, psychological and psychiatric, photo portrait, explosive-technical, biological, no less than 400 forensic medical examinations. Thanks to photo portrait and linguistic expertise it was possible to prove that it was Doku Umarov who ordered the suicide bomber Magomed Yevloev to go to Moscow for a terrorist attack.

Investigators have collected sufficient evidence therefore the case with the approved indictment is sent to the court to be tried on the merits. Investigation of a criminal case against organizers of the terrorist attack in Domodedovo airport – Doku Ymarov, Aslan Byutukaev and other peersons is to be continued.
