Officer of Investigations department of Russian Interior Ministry charged with attempted swindling on an especially large scale

The Russia’s Investigative Committee has launched a criminal proceeding against the head of Department of International Cooperation of Information Analytics Office of the Investigations Department of the Russian Interior Ministry Alexander Krokhmal.

According to investigators, early in July 2013 a former CEO of an organization told Krokhmal that officers of economic security and anticorruption divisions of the Russian Interior Ministry were inspecting his company and requested the economic documents. During personal meetings with the businessman Krokhmal promised him that for 500 thousand US dollars he could help to stop the check and the decision to refuse launching criminal proceedings. The police officer explained that the money would be given to his colleagues, who were conducting the check. In reality the accused wasn’t going to do anything in the interests of the businessman, counting to steal the money from him. The CEO had to agree. On 18 July he gave a part of the demanded sum of 150 thousand US dollars to a Krokhmal’s acquaintance, whom the police officer used as a mediator and did not inform about his criminal intentions. After that Krokhmal was detained by officers of the Federal Security Service in a café in Moscow.

In the near future investigators are going to request court to place the accused into custody as a pretrial restraining measure. Investigation is ongoing.
