In Moscow man suspected of killing former mayor of Shakhty charged and arrested

Investigating bodies of the Moscow Central Investigations Directorate of the Russia’s Investigative Committee are investigating a criminal case over murder of former mayor of the town of Shakhty, Rostov Region, Sergey Ponomarenko. The case was started over signs of a crime under part 1 of article 105 (murder) and part 1 of article 222 of the RF Criminal Code (illegal handling of firearms).

According to investigators, in the morning of 4 April 2012, at the gas station on Mozhaysky highway an unknown person came up to the mayor’s personal car and shot him dead in his head through the car window.

Thanks to carefully conducted investigating operations investigators and officers of Moscow Crime Detection Office found and detained in Saint-Petersburg a 29-year-old man from the Krasnoyarsk Territory, who is proved guilty of the crime.

At present the suspect has been charged and placed into custody as a pretrial restraining measure. Investigation is to be continued.
