Criminal case over death of Sergey Magnitsky ended due to lack of evidence of crime

Main Investigations Directorate of the Russia’s Investigative Committee has completed investigation into the death of Sergey Magnitsky.

During the probe investigators checked both circumstances of Magnitsky’s death and legality of actions of officials connected with his prosecution taking into account arguments contained in numerous complaints of victims, messages of media and appeals from human rights organizations.

Investigators have found that Magnitsky was legally arrested and detained with the sufficient evidence.

While Magnitsky was staying in pre-trial detainment facilities there were no special conditions for him different from those of other detainees, he was not pressed in any way, no physical violence or tortures were used against him.

According to forensic medical experts Magnitsky died of acute heart failure, edema of the lungs and brain with acute hemorrhage developed due to fibrillation of heart ventricles resulted from complications of his two concurrent diseases: secondary dismetabolic cardiomyopathy against chronic diabetes and active hepatitis.

This way, investigators have found no objective information that any crime was committed against Sergey Magnitsky.

Based on preliminary investigation’s results, a decision was taken to end the criminal case due to lack of evidence of a crime.
