Criminal investigation launched into death of activist helping setting up stage for Bolotnaya rally

Moscow main Investigations Directorate of the Russia’s investigative Committee has launched a criminal investigation into death of 25-year-old Maxim Melkov while he was helping to set up a stage for the rally on Bolotnaya Square. The criminal case was opened into a crime under part 2 of article 216 of the RF Criminal Code (violation of safety rules during building or other works).

According to investigators, today at about 12:20 PM, employees of a commercial organization responsible for the erecting of acoustic equipment gravely violated safety rules while erecting loudspeakers. The operations were performed by workers who lacked qualification and had not had any safety briefing.

Investigators believe that the above-mentioned violations led to the fact that 6 loudspeakers weighing no less than 600 kg collapsed when being hoisted with an electric hoist. The loudspeakers fell on the head of Maxim Melkov, who was standing on the ground. The man died on the spot from the injuries.

By now an investigating group has been set up, the examination of the scene has been completed, persons involved in the said operations are being questioned. There are other investigating operations underway to find all the circumstances of the incident and persons involved in the crime.

Investigation is to be continued.
