Municipality head in Altai Republic out on trial for bribery

The Siberian Federal District Investigations Directorate of the Russia’s investigative Committee has finished investigating a criminal case against Sergey Shevchenko, head of Chemalsky district of the Republic of Altai. He is charged with a crime under part 6 of article 290 of the RF Criminal Code (taking a bribe by an official on an especially large scale).

According to investigators, Shevchenko while being an elective official in local government received from a farmer a bribe of 5 million rubles for giving him on lease 7 land pieces for 49 years. Law enforcement agents caught Shevchenko red-handed in Chemalsky district following a number of investigating and search operations. A court satisfied the request of investigators and ruled to place him in custody as a pre-trial restraining measure.

Investigators have gathered enough evidence and the criminal case has been sent for the indictment to be approved and further on to court to be tried on the merits.
