Members of gang specializing in robberies wearing police uniforms detained in Saint-Petersburg

Saint-Petersburg Main Investigations Directorate of the Russia’s Investigative Committee continues investigating a criminal case over a crime under paragraph “b” of part 4 of article 162 of the RF Penal Code (robbery).

As a result of investigative and search operations carried out on a high professional level investigators together with officials of Office of the Federal Security Service, Main Office of the Russian Ministry of Interior and Office of the Federal Penitentiary Service for Saint-Petersburg and Leningrad Region have detained 6 members of an organized criminal group, including a current officer of Tayfun (Typhoon) special squad of the Federal Penitentiary Service.

According to investigators, the members of the group on 11 September 2013 and 15 July 2014 at Pulkovo airport wearing the uniforms of special law-enforcement units using guns and handcuffs attacked couriers arrived from the United Arab Emirates and carrying large sums of money. The suspects forced the victims in a mini-bus and stole 4 million US dollars, victims’ personal things and documents and after that dropped them in deserted places.

During the searches the investigators have confiscated: 3 Kalashnikov submachine guns, 9 pistols and ammunition; special clothes used to commit crimes; expensive cars including Bentley, bought on the money they had stolen; explosives; objects and documents relevant for the investigation.

The suspects are soon expected to be arrested and charged.

The investigators are checking information that the detainees have committed a number of serious and very serious crimes and are taking measures to prosecute other members of the organized criminal group. The investigation is ongoing.
