International conference held at Saint Petersburg Academy of Investigative Committee

The Saint Petersburg Academy of the Investigative Committee became today a venue of the international conference: Pressing Issues of Investigation and Prevention of Ethnic Crimes in the Russian Federation.

The event was attended by councilor of model security and investigational legal cooperation legislation office of the Secretariat of the Interparliament Assembly of CIS Countries’ Council (IPA CIS), secretary of the IPA CIS for defense and security Alexander Borisov, employees of the Investigative Committee’s Central Office, investigative authorities of the Northwestern Federal District, Prosecutor General’s Office, judges of the Saint Petersburg City Court, representatives of the Saint Petersburg Administration, Human Rights Commissioner for Saint Petersburg, as well as scientists, scientific workers of the city’s leading universities.

Opening the conference the Chancellor of the Saint Petersburg Academy of the Investigative Committee Lieutenant General Alexander Yefremov noted that investigating acts of terrorism and extremism is one of the Investigative Committee's priorities. To achieve their criminal goals perpetrators resort to all kinds of means and methods, as well as flaws in migration laws. The first-priority task of law enforcement is understanding fundamental reasons for conflicts and especially interethnic ones which among others are the most dangerous threat to national security.

Participants of the conference discussed cooperation between law-enforcement authorities and local governments in revealing, investigating and preventing ethnic crimes; problems of investigating acts of terrorism and extremism and other crimes committed by ethnic criminal groups; possible directions of state policy for fighting illegal migration, ways to improve laws considering foreign practices.

Concluding the conference those in attendance noted special currency of the topic and expressed their confidence that the forum would help attract attention to the said problems of specialists in all kinds of areas, open a wide public discussion and spur cooperation between law enforcers and scientists.
