Yesterday Alexander Bastrykin, the Chairman of the Investigative Committee of Russia, arrived to St. Petersburg to hold a briefing at the St. Petersburg Academy of the Investigative Committee. The briefing was attended by chiefs and officers of the Investigations Directorate II (in St. Petersburg), the St. Petersburg Main Investigations Directorate, the Leningrad Regional Investigations Directorate, and the North-West Transport Investigations Directorate of the Investigative Committee of Russia.

Alexander Bastrykin listened to reports on progress and results of particular criminal investigations into grave and especially grave offences, those were probes under personal control and high-profile probes. His subordinates reported on investigations into crimes against human life; against minors; in participatory construction; committed by gangs and organized groups; connected to multimillion embezzlement of federal funds; and other.

The Chairman paid special attention to discussing the quality and time limits of probes, and underlined the need for regular meetings with other law enforcement agencies on planning and conducting of joint search operations and investigative actions aimed at acceleration of crime detection.

Following the meeting, the Chairman of the Investigative Committee of Russia gave specific instructions and guidelines aimed at swift and qualified solving of cases he listened to about, and pointed out that it was essential to work out effective measures to improve the priority activities of investigative departments under his control. At that, he emphasized the necessity of efficient property sequestration of convicts in order to compensate the material damage swiftly and to the full. Alexander Bastrykin acknowledged most of listened to probes to be effective and expressed appreciation to his subordinates for their coordinated and high-quality work.

Moreover, today Alexander Bastrykin delivered a regular lecture to the students of the Saint Petersburg State University registered for an elective course “Search. Inquest. Investigation.” This time, the topic of the lecture was “Basic theory of investigative activities”.

The session ended with a discussion of the previously covered material, during which Alexander Bastrykin provided a comprehensive response to every question of the audience.
