Investigation into death of children on Lake Syamozero in Karelia

On 18 June 2016, a group of 47 children on holiday at summer camp of OOO Park-hotel Syamozero in Karelia and 4 adult staffers of the camp went on boating trip on the lake and were caught into a storm. The bad weather washed the boats away. The raft carrying 23 children was cast on an island, while two canoes capsized leaving 24 children struggling in water. 14 of the children died. At the moment the Investigative Committee is looking into several criminal cases opened into crimes under Articles 238 of the RF Penal Code “provision of services that do not meet safety standards”, 293 “negligence”, 125 “abandonment in danger”. The administration and the staff of OOO Park-hotel Syamozero, head of Karelia’s consumer protection authority and a medical assistant of a local hospital are being prosecuted.
