Komsomolskaya Pravda: “Investigative Committee charges Basaev’s fighter with terrorism and murders”

The Main Investigations Directorate over North Caucasian Federal District charged a fighter from Shamil Basaev’s gang with terrorism and murders. The former member of the illegal armed group who had participated in the Budennovsk hospital hostage crisis was arrested on November 20 in Moscow.

The press service of the Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation said to the North Caucasus editors office of Komsomolskaya Pravda that the investigation managed to obtain conclusive evidence of the detainee’s participation in the attack of the illegal armed group on Budennovsk and the local hospital.

The data the Committee had provided for an opportunity to press charges against the terrorist with a range of grave and especially grave offences. The Basaev’s gang member was charged with terrorism; capture of hostages; murders of civilians and servicemen; and a series of attacks committed in association with the illegal armed group.

At the moment, the investigation is establishing the fighter’s part and certain purposes in the attack. Also, it is being checked whether he had been involved in other offences not associated with the attack on Budennovsk. The press service of the Investigative Committee of Russia noted that other members of the gang that committed the attack are being actively searched for.

To remind, on November 20, previously unidentified member of the gang Khazvakha Cherkhigov was detained in Moscow. The court immediately ruled to arrest him due to the severity of his crimes. According to the investigation, he had been 17 when attacked civilians in Budennovsk as a member of Basaev’s group of 200 fighters. 1,586 Stavropol Region residents had been taken hostage at that terrifying time. 129 people had died and 137 people had been variously injured during the treacherous terrorist attack and hospital hostage-taking. Among them, there had been Budennovsk civilians, patients, and servicemen from the police and military forces.

Today, 28 members of the gang has been already sentenced; 16 more fighters had been killed during the retake of the Budennovsk hospital. Shamil Basaev had been killed in Ingushetia on July 10, 2006. The search for other perpetrators continues.
