A soldier of the Azov nationalist battalion (banned in the Russian Federation) was sentenced for the murder of two civilians in Mariupol

The evidence gathered by the Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation has been deemed sufficient by the court to convict Igor Filin, a driver-refueler of the logistics platoon of the 1st battalion of the Azov special purpose detachment (banned in Russia). He has been found guilty of committing crimes under Part 1 of Article 356 of the Criminal Code of the RF (cruel treatment of civilians) and paragraphs "a", "zh", and "l" of Part 2 of Article 105 of the Criminal Code of the RF (murder of two persons committed by an organized group on political and ideological grounds).

The investigation and the court established that on April 4, 2022, Filin, along with his colleagues, following the criminal orders of the high military and political leadership of Ukraine to maintain the occupation regime of the DPR territory through cruel treatment of the civilian population, were at the rear command post in a building located at 10 Gugel Street, Mariupol. Upon discovering two men not involved in the armed conflict, the deputy commander for personnel work of the 1st company of the 1st battalion of the Azov special purpose detachment (banned in Russia) ordered Filin to kill them and handed him a pistol with live ammunition. Carrying out the order, Filin fired several shots at the civilians with the pistol and then additionally shot them twice each with a Kalashnikov assault rifle. The men died at the scene from their injuries.

Filin fully admitted his guilt for the incriminated crimes.

The court sentenced Filin to 26 years of imprisonment to be served in a high-security correctional colony.
