Criminal case opened in shooting at police officers in Saint-Petersburg

Saint-Petersburg investigating bodies of the Russia’s Investigative Committee have launched a criminal investigation against Maxim Usanov born in 1969into signs of a crime under part 2 of article 318 of the RF Criminal Code (using life threatening violence against a representative of the authority).

According to investigators, on 24 August 2013, at night in the yard of house No 37 in Bolsheokhtinsky Prospekt, Usanov, presumably being drunk, opened fire from a trauma gun on two locals during the conflict with them. He wounded one of them in the chest and the other in the leg and fled the scene. The wounded reported about the incident to the nearest police detail. At that moment Usanov returned to the crime scene and the police officers tried to hold him, however, the man took his trauma gun and started shooting at them. As Usanov did not react to warnings and a warning shot in the air, the police officers had to shoot him. Being wounded in the leg the suspect was held. One of the victims was hospitalized in a grave state with a penetrating wound in the chest. In addition, one of the police officers was wounded in legs and arm during the shooting.

At present the court is deciding to put Usanov into custody as a pretrial restraining measure and to charge him with the said crime. Investigation is ongoing.
