Criminal investigation into MiG-29 crash launched in Astrakhan Region

The Caspian Flotilla military investigations department of the Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation launched criminal investigation into the crash of a MIG-29 aircraft under Article 351 of the Criminal Code (violation of the rules of flying and flight training).

According to preliminary data, in accordance with the flights schedule of the military unit 28004, the specified aircraft piloted by Lieutenant Colonel Alekseiy Dvinyaninov departed from the Privolzhsky airfield, Narimanov District, Astrakhan Region on a training flight at 08.30 am, July 27, 2014. At about 08.55 am, during the exercise, the flight control system allegedly became inoperative. As a result, the plane crashed killing its pilot; it is destroyed and cannot be restored. There was no ammunition on board. The crash scene is located in the steppe zone a few kilometers from the aerodrome of departure.

Currently, investigative actions aimed at establishing all the circumstances of the incident are underway. The criminal investigation is ongoing.
