Resident of Saint-Petersburg suspected of attempted grand fraud

The investigating bodies of the Russia’s Investigative Committee for the city of Saint-Petersburg have opened a criminal case against Maxim Kurpachenko, 41, on suspicion of an attempted fraud on a very large scale (part 3 of article 30, part 4 of article 159 of the RF Penal Code).

According to investigators, Kurpachenko had the information on a check related to a report on a crime committed by a 31-year-old local resident. In the period between 1 August and 9 September 2014, during meetings with the man in Saint-Petersburg Kurpachenko mislead him about the possibility to influence the decision of refusing to initiate a criminal investigation against the man, in order to get money from him. After that he demanded from the man 2 million 500 rubles for the said actions. On 15 September 2014, in a car parked on the embankment of the Moyka river, Kurpachenko received from the man 1.5 million rubles and was detained by the officers of the Office of the Federal Security Service for the city of Saint-Petersburg and Leningrad Region.

Soon restraint will be chosen and charges pressed against Kurpahcenko. The investigation is ongoing.
