Criminal investigation launched in fire on cruise ship carrying over 100 passengers in Irkutsk Region

The East Siberian Transport Investigations Directorate of the Russia’s Investigative Committee has filed an investigation in a crime under part 1 of article 238 of the RF Penal Code (unsafe services) after a fire on the cruise ship Barguzin.

According to investigators, on 2 August 2015, at about 5:10 PM, local time, a fire started on the Cruise ship Barguzin that was travelling from Peschanay bay to Lake Baikal. There were 120 people aboard including 8 crew and 112 passengers. According to preliminary information nobody was hurt. All the passengers were evacuated and are now heading to the city of Irkutsk aboard another vessel. The cruise ship was badly damaged.

At present investigative operations are underway to find out all the circumstances of the incident. The investigation is ongoing.
