The first office of the Investigative Committee’s Head Office has finished criminal proceedings against Leonid Kovalenko and Besik Chkhvirkiya charged with an attempted fraud under Part 3 of Article 30, Part 4 of Article 159 of the RF Penal Code.

According to investigators, in 2016, aware that wife of Israeli citizen was arrested in Russia following a request from Belorussia, Kovalenko and Chkhvirkoya met the Israeli citizen on multiple occasions and deceived him. They told him that they were able to assist in releasing his wife or get the refusal of extradition. They offered to pass on 35 million rubles to law enforcers, but in fact had no intention to help the man.

In September 2016, the accused were detained upon taking 540,000 US dollars from the man.

The investigators have enough evidence, so the criminal case with the signed indictment has been referred to court.
