Progress of probes into mass fires in Krasnoyarsk Territory

The Investigative Committee continues negligence investigations under Article 293 of the RF Criminal Code after several people died and many others suffered damage from fires.

Wildfires started in northern and eastern Krasnoyarsk Territory on 24 May 2017 and burned down 130 homes, while 94 people sought medical aid and three more died. More than 500 people were left homeless. According to preliminary information, the damage done to people and businesses stands at over 70 million rubles.

Chairman of the Investigative Committee Alexander Bastrykin ordered investigators to look thoroughly in the reasons and contributing factors that left hundreds of people with no homes and to check if enough was done by officials of state authorities and the local government to get forces and facilities ready to respond to wildfires.

Some 50 expert examinations have been ordered, including fire-technical, medical biological, DNA tests and others. More than 100 people have been questioned and recognized as injured parties. The investigators searched the settlements’ administrations and firefighting divisions and confiscated documents related to the investigation. They also have requested from the Krasnoyarsk Territory government to give information on social assistance provided to the affected by mass wildfires.

At present, the investigators keep on working to collect and document evidence. All initial investigative operations have been finished.

The investigators used latest equipment, including drones, to carefully examine fire sites. They checked possible sources of fires and the ways by which they spread to the settlements.

Exhaustive measures are being taken to hold those guilty accountable.
