In Sverdlovks Region former chief of penal colony found guilty of bribetaking

A court has recognized the evidence gathered by the investigating bodies of the Russia’s Investigative Committee for the Sverdlovsk Region sufficient to convict 45-year-old former chief of penal colony No 62 with special conditions of the Sverdlovsk Region Main Office of the Federal Penitentiary Service. He was found guilty of crimes under paragraph “b” of part 5 of article 290 (taking a bribe aggravated by extraction) and paragraph “c” of part 5 of article 290 of the RF Penal Code (taking a bribe on a large scale).

The court and investigators have found that in March 2011, the colony chief received from relatives of one of the prisoners a bribe of 120 thousand rubles for arranging favorable conditions while he serves his time. In addition, in May 2012 and May 2013, in two parts he took a bribe of 300 thousand rubles for assisting in grant of parole. Immediately after he got the second part of the bribe, the colony chief was held by security officers of the Sverdlovsk Region Main Office of the Federal Penitentiary Service.

The court has sentenced the man to 11 years to be served in a maximum-security penal colony and a fine of 24 million rubles (sixtyfold bribe) and banned him from occupying certain positions on state service for 2 years.
