An explosion happened and brought about a rockslide in the Severnaya coal mine, operated by AO Vorkutaugol and located in the town of Vorkuta, Komi Republic on 25 February 2016. Several more blasts occurred between 26 and 28 February 2016. Dead bodies of 4 miners were found during rescue operations, while 28 more miners remained trapped in the affected section of the mine. Several of the evacuated miners applied for medical aid. Several miners and rescuers were injured. A criminal investigation has been opened into a crime under Part 3 of Article 216 of the RF Penal Code (violation of safety rules during mining, construction or other work, entailing death of two or more people by negligence). The investigation is ongoing.
