The commander of the reconnaissance unit of the Ukrainian Armed Forces has been found guilty of killing civilians in the city of Mariupol

The evidence gathered by the Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation has been deemed sufficient by the Supreme Court of the Donetsk People's Republic to convict Myroslav Chernomor, a junior sergeant and commander of a reconnaissance unit in the 36th Separate Marine Brigade of the Ukrainian Navy. He has been found guilty of crimes under Part 1 of Article 356 of the Criminal Code of the RF (cruel treatment of civilians, use of prohibited means and methods in an armed conflict), clauses "a, zh, l" of Part 2 of Article 105 of the Criminal Code of the RF (murder of two or more persons committed by an organized group, motivated by political, ideological hatred), and Part 3 of Article 30, clauses "a", "zh", "l" of Part 2 of Article 105 of the Criminal Code of the RF (attempted murder of two or more persons committed by an organized group, motivated by political, ideological hatred and hostility).

The investigation and the court have established that between February 24 and May 19, 2022, Chernomor and other servicemen of the 36th Separate Marine Brigade of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, along with other Ukrainian military formations, were stationed in Mariupol, DPR, with the aim of violently maintaining power in the territory controlled by the Kyiv regime. On one of the days between March 20 and April 12, 2022, they received orders from higher command to take positions in the Nikopolsky Avenue area and prevent the free movement of civilians.

Leading a group of ten reconnaissance unit soldiers from the 36th Separate Marine Brigade of the Ukrainian Navy, Chernomor gave an order to kill all civilians suspected of aiding the armed forces of the DPR and the Russian Federation. Following this order, one of his subordinates, motivated by political and ideological hatred, fired several targeted shots from a rifle at two civilians, causing them fatal gunshot wounds.

After that, another Ukrainian Armed Forces soldier, acting on Chernomor's direct orders, also shot two men with a machine gun, believing they supported the special military operation and held pro-Russian positions. Another victim managed to escape the shooting area and find shelter in a safe place.

The court sentenced Chernomor to life imprisonment in a maximum-security correctional colony.

Previously, Chernomor's subordinates, who carried out his criminal orders to kill civilians, had been sentenced to 25 years in prison each.
