In Saint-Petersburg suspects in attacks on elderly people identified

Saint-Petersburg Main Investigation Directorate of the Russia’s investigative Committee in active interaction with the criminalists of the Central Office has identified the suspects in attacking elderly citizens. The police were ordered to detain one of the suspects.

According to preliminary reports the man was involved in attacks on elderly people in Saint-Petersburg on 7, 8, and 8 January 2014.

The way the crimes were committed coincides, namely, both in the first and in the second cases the attackers involved a child, who accompanied them while entering the buildings and held the doors, therefore the criminal cases have been filed in a single law suit and are being investigated as containing signs of crimes under paragraph “d” of part 2 of article 161 and part 4 of article 111 of the RF Penal Code (robbery, intentional infliction of grievous bodily harm involving death by negligence).

Investigators have found that the main role in the assaults was played by a 38-year-old resident of St. Petersburg. This is confirmed by the record of a CCTV cam installed in one of the buildings, where the attack took place and by other evidence gathered during the probe. On 20 January 2014 the said man died of overdose in a flat in Industrialny prospekt. He had an 8-year-old son, but was unparented. The child is planned to be interviewed involving psychologists and teachers.

Investigating operations to gather and consolidate the evidence are underway. Investigation is ongoing.
