In Komi, probe launched against minibus driver guilty of traffic accident injuring young athletes

The Komi Republic Office of the Investigative Committee has initiated criminal proceedings against a minibus driver suspected of providing unsafe services that entailed grievous bodily harm to a person under Part 2, item “c” of Article 238 of the RF Penal Code.

According to investigators, on 13 February 2017, the suspect was transporting 9 people, including a coach and 8 athletes, 7 of whom were teenagers aged between 12 and 16, on a Volkswagen Transporter T4. The driver violated the traffic road and collided with an Audi-100 and then with a SCANIA heavy hauler with a semitrailer at the kilometer mark 59 on the road between Syktyvkar and Ukhta in Ust-Vymsky District. Passengers of the minibus suffered different injuries and one of the teenagers sustained severe traumas.

The investigators have established that the minibus had gotten an additional set of passenger seats, while six of the seats had no seatbelts which made the vehicle banned from having been used under the current legislation.

The investigators have ordered forensic medical and technical examinations while other investigative operations are underway to find out all the circumstances surrounding the incident and to find and document the evidence.

At the same time the investigators are going to give a legal assessment to the actions of people who had organized the competition and the transportation of the teenagers.
