Probe launched in death of 10-year-old boy in Kemerovo Region

The Kemerovo Region Office of the Investigative Committee has opened an investigation in negligent homicide under Part 1 of Article 109 of the RF Penal Code after the death of a 10-year-old boy whose dead body was found in a cinder pit.

According to investigators, two children came to the edge of a smoking pit in Chertansky block of the town of Belovo on the evening of 5 May 2017. The edges of the pit collapsed and both children fell in the pit. One of them, a 9-year-old boy, managed to get out and called for help. Local residents called rescuers, but the 10-year-old boy died on the scene. The 9-year-old was taken to hospital with 3rd-degree burns.

The investigators are going to identify the owner of the premises, if the pit was maintained in due order and to find the one responsible for its maintenance. They are also going to look into the reasons and contributing factors of the incident. By now the investigators have questioned the local residents, rescuers and officials of the district administration. The incident scene was cordoned off, lights and security were set and will remain there until specialists make a decision on which steps should be taken to make the pit safe.

The senior officials of the Kemerovo Region Office of the Investigative Committee have assumed control over the investigation.
