Chairman of the Investigative Committee Instructs to Give Legal Evaluation to Actions of Ukrainian Servicemen and Militants of Nationalist Battalions Holding Civilians Hostage

A. I. Bastrykin instructed the Main Investigative Department of the IC of Russia to document the instances of using civilians as hostages on the territory of the Donetsk and Lugansk People's Republics.

According to the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation, in the village of Nikolskoye in the DPR, on the territory of the Orthodox Nikolo-Vasilievsky Monastery of the Dormition, members of the nationalist battalion Aidar held hostage about 300 monks and civilians during the liberation of Nikolskoye by Russian units; the civilians are unscathed.

In addition, according to the People's Militia of the LPR, Ukrainian troops do not let civilians out of a number of settlements of the LPR, in particular, Rubezhnoye, Severodonetsk and Lisichansk, using their houses as firing positions and them as human shield – the nationalist units cover behind them when firing from residential areas.

The head of the Investigative Committee ordered the investigators of the Main Investigative Department of the IC of Russia to carry out investigative actions aimed at identifying and holding criminally liable specific individuals of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and nationalist battalions guilty of detaining civilians.
