Investigative Committee hosts working meeting between its Chairman and State Duma deputies – members of Russian People’s Front

A working meeting of Chairman of the Russia’s Investigative Committee Alexander Bastrykin and State Duma deputies – members of Russian People’s Front took place today in the Russia’s Investigative Committee. Apart from Mr. Bastrykin the meeting was attended by his deputies and heads of divisions of the Committee’s Central Office, as well as Vice-Chairpersons of the State Duma Sergey Zheleznyak and Lyudmila Shvetsova, First Vice-Chairman of the State Duma for nationalities affairs Mikhail Starshinov and other deputies.

In his speech Mr. Bastrykin told about the results of the Committee’s work in investigating the acts of corruption noting that “over the past three years the Investigative Committee has received 120 thousand reports on corruption crimes, over 50 thousand criminal cases have been opened over them and over 25 thousand of them have been sent to court to be tried on the merits, 9 billion rubles of damages has been paid to the state”. He also stressed that “fighting corruption is a mission of not only law enforcement, but of the whole of society, including non-governmental organizations, which the Russian People’s Front belongs to”. Mr. Bastrykin also noted a high percentage of violent criminal cases solved. In all, throughout the country, the percentage of criminal cases solved stands at 88% with 100% for some regions. During the meeting the Investigative Committee’s Chairman offered to return to the Russian penal legislation confiscation of property as punishment for corruption, in order to enhance efficiency of battling against corruption.

During the meeting the parties discussed interaction of civil society with the Investigative Committee and other law enforcement agencies and the state authority as a whole, as well as improvement of legislation necessary for more efficient work of the Committee.

Following the discussion the parties came up with measures aimed at enhancement of efficiency in interaction between the Investigative Committee and State Duma deputies in reviewing deputies’ requests.
