Criminal case opened in shooting at homes and checkpoint in Rostov Region from Ukrainian side

The Southern Federal District Investigations Directorate of the Russia’s Investigative Committee has opened a criminal case against unidentified individuals regarding crimes under part 3 of article 30, paragraphs “a”, “f” and “g” of part 2 of article 105 of the RF Penal Code (attempted murder of two or more persons committed by a group of people by a generally dangerous way).

According to investigators, on 28 June 2014, military servants of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, armed members of the National Guard and Right Sector from the territory of Ukraine fired explosive shells at settlements in the Rostov Region in the Russian Federation: the village of Shakhty-24 of the town of Gukovo, the village of Vasetsky in Krasny Sulin District and a customs checkpoint in Gukovo with the purpose of intentional murder of those on the other side.

As a result of the said illegal actions, a shell hole with at least 11 metallic fragments of a shell, was found 20 meters away from the gate to household No 105 on Kolkhoznaya street in the village of Vasetsky inhabited by a family of three. The wall of the house was also damaged in at least 10 places. In addition, a household in Shakhty-24, Gukovo was damaged. There are also damages to the administrative building of Gukovo customs checkpoint and multiple shrapnel damages inside the building.

The military servants of the Ukrainian Armed forces and armed members of the National Guard and Right Sector failed to complete their intentional actions, that is murder of civilians in the settlements in the Rostov Region, and people in the customs checkpoint, under circumstances independent of their will. Casualties were avoided inly thanks to the fact that all the victims managed to take cover. All those facts confirm once more that Ukrainian authorities continue ignoring generally accepted international norms regarding protection of civilians during an armed conflict.

An operative investigating team has been formed to investigate the crime. A number of investigating and search operations are underway to identify the persons involved in shelling and those who ordered it. The investigation is ongoing.
