In Khabarovsk Territory nurse of infant home found guilty of grievous bodily harm and beating of babies

A court has recognized the evidence gathered by the investigating bodies of the Russia’s Investigative Committee for the Khabarovsk Territory sufficient to convict a 63-year-old former nurse of an infant home in Khabarovsk. The woman was found guilty of crimes under paragraph “b” of part 2 of article 111 of the RF Penal Code (deliberate infliction of grievous bodily harm), part 1 of article 116 (beating).

The court and investigators found that in the evening of 1 April 2013, two nurses of the infant home decided to make a party in the facility. A 38-year-old nurse went to a store and bought a bottle of vodka. The women drank it. It was too little for them and the same nurse went to the store again. But as it was late and the store was closed, she had to buy vodka in a restaurant. While she was away, a 7-month-old boy, an inmate of the facility, woke up and started crying. The 63-year-old woman put him in a plastic bathtub and covered him with a blanket, took the bathtub to a bathroom and put it on the floor. At that moment two more babies woke up and started crying: a 3-year-old boy and a 10-month-old girl. The nurse beat them and after that they fell asleep. Then the other nurse came back with the second bottle of vodka and the women carried on their party. The younger nurse asked where the 7-month-boy disappeared. The other nurse answered that “he went to walk” – this was their slang for isolating the babies in the bathroom. About 5 AM, the two women discovered that the boy was not breathing. They reported it to a pediatrician on duty in a separate building of the infant home, who called the ambulance. At hospital doctors resuscitated the baby after a clinical death.

During the investigation, the 38-year-old nurse charged with a crime under article 125 of the RF Penal Code (leaving in danger), confessed to the crime, repented and actively cooperated with the investigators. The criminal case against her was stopped due to a resolution of the State Duma “On amnesty dedicated to the 20th anniversary of the Constitution of the Russian Federation”.

The 63-year-old nurse did not admit her guilt and refused to give testimonies.

The court has sentenced the woman to 6 years to be served in a minimum-security penal colony.
