Investigation launched in kidnapping of Russian journalist Andrey Stenin in eastern Ukraine

The Main Investigations Directorate of the Russia’s Investigative Committee has started an investigation after Andrey Stenin, a photojournalist of international news agency Russia Today was kidnapped in Ukraine (article 126 of the RF Penal Code).

Andrey Stenin had been on a business trip in Ukraine since 13 May and carried out tasks of the editor’s office in Kiev, Luhansk, Donetsk, Mariupol, Shakhtyorsk, Slavyansk and other cities. The last time the editors saw materials from him was on 5 August and after that the journalists stopped coming in contact.

Investigators are taking measures to find Stenin’s whereabouts and people who kidnapped him. They are checking if militants of the Ukraine’s National Guard and security forces had a hand in the kidnapping.

During the probe, in order to find out all the circumstances of Stenin’s disappearance and in accordance with Russian criminal procedure laws, the investigators are going to immediately file a request on legal assistance with the competent authorities in Ukraine.
