In Karelia investigation opened in improper medical aid to patient

Karelia investigating bodies of the Russia’s Investigative Committee have launched a criminal investigation in a crime under part 2 of article 118 of the RF Penal Code (infliction of grievous bodily harm by negligence committed due to improper discharge of professional duties) after a 17-year-old girl received improper medical aid in Kalevala Central District Hospital.

According to investigators, on 28 March 2014, medical staff of the central district hospital did a cesarean section to a young woman. During the surgery the doctors failed to save the baby and left a napkin in the patient’s small pelvis cavity.

As a result, the woman felt worse during several months. She had to undergo another surgery and the napkin was extracted from her body.

The investigators are going to qualify actions of the doctors who monitored the pregnancy and actions of the medics who let the baby die.

At present investigative operations are underway to find out all the circumstances of the incident. The investigation is ongoing.
