In Karelia, probe launched into death of children

The Karelia Office of the Investigative Committee has opened a criminal investigation into death of 12 people after a boat capsized on Lake Syamozero in Pryazha District, Karelia (Part 3 of Article 238 of the RF Penal Code).

According to preliminary data, on 18 June 2016, some children and adults from summer camp Park-Hotel Syamozero were caught in a storm while boating on the lake. The three boats were carrying 47 children and 4 adult instructors. During the trip the boats capsized and sank killing 11 children and 1 instructor. The SAR operation is continued. Investigators and criminalists of the central office of the Investigative Committee have set off for the scene. The investigation is being controlled by Chairman of the Investigative Committee Alexander Bastrykin.

During the probe the investigators are going to qualify the actions of the camp’s staff and other individuals responsible of the letting the children go on trip in the lake in bad weather. One of the instructors has been detained and is being questioned.

The investigators are taking measures to question the injured children and to confiscate from the camp the documents of interest.

The investigation is continued.
