In Kamchatka Territory, probe launched into death of twins in maternity hospital

The Kamchatka Territory Office of the Investigative Committee has opened an investigation into a crime under Part 3 of Article 109 of the RF Penal Code (negligent homicide of two or more people due to malpractice) after the death of twin newborn boy and girl.

According to investigators, on 27 September 2016, a 37-yearold woman was admitted into a pathology department of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky City Maternity Hospital No 1, where a doctor told her that she needed urgent therapeutic delivery. After that the woman was transferred to Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky City Maternity Hospital No 2 for a cesarean section. The woman had the surgery on 28 September 2016, and according to her both of the babies were born alive and healthy (28-29 weeks). On 30 September 2016, the baby boy died in Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky City Maternity Hospital No 2. According to medical papers, the cause of the boy’s death was congenital pneumonia. The baby girl was transferred to the Children’s Territorial Hospital where she died on 18 October 2016. According to the medical conclusion, she died of congenital sepsis.

At present investigators are looking into the details of the incident. Forensic medical inquiries will be run to find out the exact cause of twins’ death. The investigation is ongoing.
