Preliminary check underway into death of two dolphins in Maritime Aquarium

The Maritime Territory office of the Investigative Committee has launched a check into death of two pacific white-sided dolphins in Maritime Aquarium, a federal state-funded institution.

On the morning of 25 October 2016, a worker found a white-sided dolphin lying on the bottom of a swimming pool. Two other dolphins were swimming around and showed no signs of ailment. However, later in the day another one of them suddenly stopped swimming. Workers tried to resuscitate it, but successfully and had to certify death. The third dolphin got shots of medicines stimulating the immune system and taking off stress from nervous system. At present it is in stable condition.

An autopsy found no outer injuries on the carcasses. A histological screen is now being run to find poisons, toxins or chemicals. A procedural decision will be made following the results of all the tests. The investigators are going to give legal assessment to actions or omission of the Aquarium’s staff.
