Nizhny Novgorod Region investigators initiate return of Ivan Shihskin’s painting to Russia

The Nizhny Novgorod Region Office of the Investigative Committee is investigation a case against 4 citizens of Russia and two citizens of Belarus charged with an attempt on a law-enforcer under Article 317 of the RF Criminal Code. During the probe, the investigation found out that the said people had stolen paintings by famous artists from a museum in Vladimir Region.

According to investigators, on the night of 8 November 2016, at the federal highway between Nizhny Novgorod and Saratov, the accused shot at a police vehicle with a traffic police inspector inside and then fled the scene. The investigators found out that the accused were involved in 18 counts of stealing, burglaries, robberies, including the 2013 stealing of paintings by Ivan Shishkin “Forest. Fur Trees”, by S. Zhukovsky “First Snow” and K. Korovin “Fisherman” from the Vyazniki Museum of History of Art in Vladimir Region.

At present, the investigators have information that the Shishkin’s painting is at the National Arts Museum in Belorussia where it was transferred after it had been found and confiscated by Belorussian competent authorities.  

The Russian Investigative Committee has initiated the return of the painting to Russia.
