Suspect of killing adopted child detained in Smolensk Region

On 4 January 2018, the Smolensk Region Office of the Investigative Committee received a report that the body of a child with signs of violent death was found in a house in the village of Agibalovo, Kholm-Zhirkovsky District.

An investigation was opened in the murder under Part 2, item “c” of Article 105 of the RF Criminal Code.

Thanks to well-planned investigative and search operations, the crime has been solved on hot scent and the suspect has been detained – it is the 50-year-old husband of the child’s adoptive mother.

According to preliminary information, the suspect’s family had 4 adopted children aged between 6 and 10 years. On 3 January 2018, the woman went to visit her relatives in other town, while her husband stayed at home with the children. On the night of 4 January, the man killed the 7-year-old girl.

The suspect has been placed in custody pending trial.

Three other children have been confiscated and put in a state institution. The investigation continues.

Investigators keep up with investigative and other operations to find out all the circumstances surrounding the incident. They have started a check against officials of the local child neglect prevention authority responsible for watching the family. They are going to check the circumstances under which the children were adopted, find out reasons for and contributing factors of the crime. A procedural decision will be made following the check.
