The Sverdlovsk Regional Directorate of the Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation launched a criminal inquiry under Part 1 of Article 105 of the Criminal Code of Russia (murder).
At the initial stage, it was impossible to identify all participants of the incident. The conflict was spontaneous, its participants (from each side) did not know each other and after the girl’s health condition worsened, the young people from the opposite side of the conflict fled the scene.
However, the investigators obtained a video from a recorder that showed two participants of the conflict who had fled. In this relation, the investigators of the Investigative Committee of Russia and forensic investigators of the Regional Investigations Directorate decided to address the society through mass media with a request to provide help in the identification of the incident participants recorded on the video.
A number of Yekaterinburg mass media outlets eagerly responded to the investigation request and published photos of the wanted persons and information that direct witnesses of the conflict were also needed. On the day of publication, officers of the Investigative Committee of Russia received a number of calls from citizens who significantly complemented the data obtained by the investigators and police officers by that moment during investigative actions and search activities. Apart from that, witnesses provided important data that facilitated the definition of an impartial picture of the situation.
As a result of work carried out by the operative investigative team and due to the active help of mass media and society representatives, a 16-year-old young man suspected of infliction of the injury to the girl that caused her death was located. At present, the young man is detained and is giving testimony.

A forensic examination is being carried out to define the exact cause of death of the victim. Apart from that, the investigation is defining all causes and circumstances that facilitated the commission of the especially grave offense in order to take subsequent measures to prevent similar acts from occurring in the future.
