The Chairman of the Investigative Committee of Russia puts under supervision the progress of investigation of a criminal case into methanol poisoning in the Republic of Tatarstan

On November 16, 2021 in Kazan city residents of 1999-2003 year of birth were hospitalized with signs of methanol poisoning (12 - in Kazan, 1 - in Moscow, 1 - in Neftekamsk). Their condition is evaluated as moderate to serious. Currently investigators established that on the night of November 15-16 a group of 18 young people celebrated the birthday of one of them in the cottage in Salmachi settlement of Kazan. Fourteen of them drank alcoholic beverages after which they felt sick and sought medical help. The Investigative Department of the Investigative Committee of Russia for the Republic Tatarstan launched a criminal case under Paragraph C of Part 2 of Article 238 of the Criminal Code (production, storage, transportation for sale or sale of goods and products that do not meet the safety requirements of life or health of the consumers).

The investigation established that the day before one of them had bought alcohol-containing liquid in a 5-liter plastic bottle. The bottle was subsequently delivered to the cottage in a trunk of a car-sharing car.  In the trunk of the car there was a bottle with non-freezing automobile liquid of the same volume. The young men mistakenly took it with them, after which they added flavorings to the liquid and consumed it.

The Chairman of the Investigative Committee of Russia instructed the head of the Investigative Department of the Investigative Committee of Russia for the Republic of Tatarstan V.A. Lipsky to report on the progress of the investigation.

The progress of investigation is under supervision of the Central Office of the Investigative Committee of Russia.
