A participant in the attack on law enforcement officers in the Novolaksky Region of the Republic of Dagestan in 1999 will appear in court

The Main Investigative Directorate of the Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation for the North Caucasian Federal District has completed the investigation of the criminal case against Alexander Umantsev, accused of committing a crime under Article 317 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (attempt on the life of a law enforcement officer).

According to the investigation, on September 5, 1999, Umantsev, as part of a united armed gang under the overall leadership of Basayev and Khattab, participated in an attack on officers of the Novolaksky Region Department of Internal Affairs of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia for the Republic of Dagestan. They were positioned at the pre-equipped post "Televyshka," located at an elevation of 715.3 meters on the western outskirts of the village of Novolakskoye in the Novolaksky region of the Republic of Dagestan. During the attack, Umantsev fired aimed shots at them with a Kalashnikov assault rifle. As a result of the attack, which lasted until the morning of September 6, 1999, three police officers were killed.

The investigation has gathered sufficient evidence to send the criminal case against Umantsev to court for trial.

Together with operational services, investigative, operational search and other procedural actions aimed at identifying all members of the gang involved in the attack are ongoing. The investigation of the criminal case continues.
