Criminal investigation launched into mass poisoning of school children in Perm

The investigating bodies of the Russia’s Investigative Committee in Perm Territory have launched a criminal investigation into the signs of a crime under part 1 of article 238 of the RF Penal Code (production, storage, transportation or marketing of goods and products, execution of work or rendering services not meeting the safety standards) following the mass poisoning of students in school No 40 in the city of Perm.

We remind that 88 students of 3, 4 and 5 grades were hospitalized on 17 and 18 October 2013 and diagnosed with salmonellosis, two of them are in resuscitation department in stable state with positive dynamics. In addition, a teacher has been hospitalized with the same diagnosis. 36 students of school No 40 are being attended by the doctors in their homes including at the weekends.

It has been found out that a businesswoman rented a kitchen in school No 40 and rendered catering services for children on the contract basis. The investigators have examined the kitchen, have received explanations from the school administration and have questioned the people, who were in charge of organizing the catering. All the documents regarding organization of catering in school No 40 have been requested. The suppliers of food, the procedure of supplying, storage and cooking are being checked. During the probe the investigators are going to qualify the actions of the officials of controlling bodies and authorities charged with providing safety and surveillance over the quality of food given to children. The leadership of the Russia’s Investigative Committee has taken the investigation under control.
